Madison, WI Named Fifth Gayest City in America
01/19/2010
The not-so-secret is out: Advocate Magazine and Advocate.com, a national gay and lesbian news magazine and website, ranked Madison as its #5 gayest city in America in its February 2010 issue
Stating, “Madison is often called the Berkeley of the Midwest—the east side is hippie-crunchy, there’s a brand-new gay dance club (Plan B), and heaps of cute blond dreadlocked nuevo organic farmer dudes can be found at the Willy Street Co-op or the Farmers’ Market drinking their own beer from mason jars,” the Advocate draws on the playful and whimsical side within the gay community in Madison.
But Madison’s gay community is more than fun and games. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community is a vibrant, professional and productive part of the fabric of Madison.
Madison’s progressive nature, diverse population and inclusive libertarian foundation are among its strongest characteristics in drawing leisure visitors as well as national conventions, events and rankings within LGBTQ professional associations and events.
LGBTQ groups that are coming to Madison in 2010 include the Midwest BLGTA College Conference in March and the International Gay & Lesbian Country Dance Association in November.
This latest ranking continues to validate Madison as a gay-friendly city. Other recognition includes the following:
- Madison Gay Hockey Association Named Outsports’ Top Gay Sports Groups, April 2009
- UW-Madison Campus Rated Among Nation’s Best LGBT-Friendly Campuses, The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students, August 2006
Rounding out the list for the top five gayest cities in America:
- Atlanta, GA
- Burlington, VT
- Iowa City, IA
- Bloomington IN
- Madison, WI
